THE CHACHAPOYAS CULTURE AND THE FORTRESS OF KUELAP

The Fortress of Kuelap is located in Chachapoyas, department of Amazonas, at 3000 meters above sea level. It belongs to the pre-Inca period and although it has not been possible to determine with exactitude its antiquity, some scholars place it in the VIII century.

Currently it can be reached by cable car, making the trip faster and more accessible. It used to be accessible only by bus through a long and dangerous road.

The ancient stone city has narrow entrances as a security measure. The esplanade is oriented from north to south, measuring around 600 meters with a surrounding wall of 19 meters in height. When you are there the walls seem huge and the landscape is amazing.

The Chachapoyas were great warriors, it is suspected that they may have had contact with Viking expeditions because of their large size, blond and red hair. The Incas could never defeat them in battle but came to subdue them by besieging the fortress until they surrendered due to lack of supplies. This great megalithic monument does not have as much publicity as Machu Pichu but it is also very impressive.
